Christ Embassy Church International located on Billings Way in Oregun area of Lagos was on Tuesday gutted by fire, throwing the entire metropolis in a state of pandemonium.
Our correspondent gathered that the fire which started at about 4 pm as a result of power surge from one of the generating sets in the church's power house led to multiple explosion of the giant electricity generators used to power the massive church.
The raging fire which consumed the church auditorium left a fire serviceman with the Lagos State Fire Service seriously injured.
LEADERSHIP observed that the incident caused terrible traffic gridlock on Billings Way and Oregun road, even as fire servicemen battled to put out the fire.
According to the director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasaq Fadipe, the fire incident started around 4pm as a result of power surge from one of the generating sets in the church's power house.
He said about 14 generating sets were destroyed, as well as an auditorium.
"It was a very serious fire outbreak. The fire involved the generator house. And a lot of armoured cables were also affected by the inferno.
"They have about 14 big generators that were affected as well as the church's stationary diesel and petrol tanks.
"However, with the effort of the fire servicemen, we didn't allow the tanks to burst. And we also prevented the fire from spreading to the âir conditioner house. But, one of the servicemen sustained injury," he added.
